Project Scope

Network Rail was looking to improve the safety levels of trackside work and approached us to define and develop the technical system. The initial phase of works will specifically be aimed at the current trackside activities that are running red zone unassisted.

The tool should be able to calculate and display the level of risk associated with different working procedures on selected railway areas. This will allow Network Rail to assess the most appropriate method of working on the trackside to mitigate risks and ensure the optimum level of safety.

Methodologies Used

RSK Business Solutions has developed a web based tool and accompanying iOS application to assess the risk to worker safety while working trackside on different railway lines and assets. TRAM considers the various risks while working on the trackside and uses bespoke algorithms to calculate risks scores pertaining to different methods of working. The tool gives Network Rail an insight into the level of hazard associated with certain working conditions on different assets to allow them to make an informed decision on which methods of working are appropriate and safe.

The tool provides integration with ELIPSE, a system that contains information about railway assets, to allow for up-to-date and reliable data to be fed into the TRAM tool. Users can select their own railway area and complete a risk assessment based on specialist questions. The tool then calculates risk scores associated with each work system and lists them in order of safety.

Final Deliverable

Network Rail are currently piloting TRAM among various divisions to the staff that will benefit from the tool.

Network Rail are currently piloting TRAM among various divisions to the staff that will benefit from the tool. The risk scores are displayed, as calculated using built-in algorithms and the user-inputted risk assessment.

Upon a successful pilot, the tool will be used nationally across divisions of Network Rail to analyse and mitigate the risks of working on the trackside.
