Daydreams also do come true! Do you remember a time when you wished your phone would automatically detect your flight time or meeting schedule from your calendar or emails and send you timely notifications, reminders and alarms so as to not miss them? And, for the real enthusiasts of technology, a time when we would be woken up to warm lights and soothing music which is your preferred tune of alarm, and the smell of coffee brewing by your table?

How is the Internet of Things (IoT) Shaping the Future of Industrial Automation?

Daydreams also do come true! Do you remember a time when you wished your phone would automatically detect your flight time or meeting schedule from your calendar or emails and send you timely notifications, reminders and alarms so as to not miss them? And, for the real enthusiasts of technology, a time when we would be woken up to warm lights and soothing music which is your preferred tune of alarm, and the smell of coffee brewing by your table?

Times have changed and these are a reality. Though not widely accepted or easily affordable, high-end smart homes are the new big thing. Smart devices of the future are rumoured to become smarter by picking up small learnings as the above to make life easier for the regular human. Smart homes that regulate itself according to your schedule are soon to become a reality with IoT.

Smart home devices are going to be much more than controlling devices when connected over the internet.  What is going to be revolutionary is the way they will interact with you and each other, taking in data and functioning intelligently. Human intervention will diminish while your smart devices will be able to make autonomous decisions.

When the Internet of Things combines with Artificial Intelligence, here is the future of the automation industry that we can look forward to:

Independent control

It is said that all devices with switches to operate them shall be controllable on wireless IoT devices like mobile phones, smart wearable devices and web platforms with most even responding to voice commands. These devices are usually the utility products, like refrigerators, air conditioners, thermostats, washing machines, coffee makers and even the water pumps and sprinklers. Control and access will be seen everywhere around us. Platforms will come into place that will allow manufacturers to develop smart products that will be able to communicate across brands in a standardised manner.

Self-diagnosing Devices

Smart products will become self diagnosing and will be able to communicate the owners as to when and how maintenance or attention is needed. Manufacturers will be notified in case the failure of a product is due, which in turn will help owners take appointments for device service well in advance. This would help in any last minute complaints and make after-sales service a pleasurable experience as compared to the present times.

Self-aware

Self aware devices will be the new trend in IoT products, something that will be seen across all smart devices. For example, it is also said that smart refrigerators will become so self aware that they will be able to send notifications of stock getting wasted or if restocking is needed. In fact, there could be AI suggesting routes and picking up supermarkets on the routes that have the stock of grocery that needs replenishment! That is how powerful data can get!

Know the masters

The one thing that is still a matter of slight concern in the AI and automation world is security. With time, the security of your homes, data and devices is going to be a priority to the future of industrial automation. Homes will effectively recognise it’s owners as opposed to visitors. Video door-bells will tend to get smarter. Face recognition will go a step ahead into recognising the visitor details and informing the owner about the same, upping security protocols. Remote opening of the doors will be left at the hands of the owner. Sensors will pick up movement in any part of the house and thus, break-ins will become difficult since the police department will be informed immediately and automatically without homeowners having to make any calls.

A greener world with IoT

Simpler and greener – the two functional words that would realistically and effectively describe the IoT’s transformation. Tracking of power consumed by all devices will help undermine a definitive usage pattern to minimize wastage and optimize energy utilization. Sensors can sense room occupancy and effectively switch off lights and other electrical devices. The intensity of lights, including outdoor lights, will also be monitored and controlled as per requirement.

All kinds of IoT development powered smart devices are going through a transition to becoming smarter, faster, autonomous and greener. These include all utility products, entertainment, control and security home devices. Machine learning is playing a big part in analysing and transforming data into important functional information along with the advent of faster and continuous internet connectivity. It is indeed the right time for developer, enablers and integrators to bring about smarter products of top-notch quality to our homes.
